The Story Behind the Shirt
Every Marine who's spent time at Camp Lejeune has heard the jokes. "Don't drink the water." The problem is, for a lot of Veterans, it wasn't a joke. It was the water you drank every day. You brushed your teeth with it. You showered in it. You cooked with it. You filled your canteen from it. It wasn't something you questioned because why would you? It came out of the faucet on a United States military base.
Nobody stood at morning formation and announced, "By the way, you might want to skip the tap water today." Life went on as usual. You hydrated after a long run. Filled another coffee pot. Grabbed another drink after a day in the field. It was just part of everyday life at Camp Lejeune. Veterans weren't thinking about contaminants. They were thinking about inspections, PT, deployments, and making it through another day.
The Questions Started
Years later, the questions started.
Veterans began hearing about contaminated drinking water, toxic chemicals, and health conditions that might be connected to their time at Camp Lejeune. Suddenly, those ordinary moments didn't seem so ordinary anymore. Something as simple as taking a sip of water became part of a much bigger conversation. Veterans found themselves researching dates, duty stations, medical records, and trying to remember exactly when they had been there. It was a connection nobody ever expected to make.
Another Journey
For many Veterans, that discovery led to another journey through the VA disability claims process. Medical appointments. Records requests. More paperwork. More waiting. The hope that someone would finally recognize what had happened and how it may have affected their health. For some, that process resulted in answers. For others, it resulted in another letter and another frustrating reminder that not every claim follows the same path.
Just Another Sip
This shirt isn't about politics. It isn't about blame. It's about remembering the Veterans who unknowingly drank contaminated water while faithfully serving their country. It's about recognizing that sometimes the danger isn't something you can see, hear, or avoid. Sometimes it's as simple as taking another drink from the nearest faucet because that's what everyone else was doing.
