Every Veteran eventually learns there are two kinds of math. There's the math you learned in school... and then there's VA Math. One helped you pass algebra. The other leaves you staring at a VA disability rating wondering if you somehow skipped an entire chapter of mathematics. A Veteran spends years in service accumulating injuries that would make most people schedule a lifetime of doctor's appointments. The knees ache, the back hurts, the shoulders don't move like they used to, the ringing in the ears never stops, and somehow every condition earns its own VA disability percentage. You add them together and proudly discover you've accumulated what feels like 280% worth of injuries. Then the VA rating system politely informs you that you're actually 90% disabled. Apparently every new disability starts with whatever healthy percentage you have left, because why would math work the way everyone expects it to?

So naturally, you pull out a calculator. Then a spreadsheet. Then you search for "How does VA Math work?" After reading charts, graphs, explanations, and examples, you're somehow even more confused than when you started. Every Veteran knows someone who has spent hours trying to explain VA Math with circles, pie charts, and percentages. By the end of the conversation, everyone agrees on exactly one thing: nobody is completely sure they understand it. It's almost become a rite of passage in the VA claims process.
