The Story Behind the Shirt
For most people, a rough ride means hitting a pothole on the way to work. Veterans know there's a world of difference between a pothole and an IED.
You could be rolling down what looked like an ordinary road in a Humvee, MRAP, or other military vehicle. The conversation was normal. Someone was talking over the radio. Someone else was complaining about the heat. Maybe you were thinking about chow or counting the days until you got home. Then, in less than a second, everything changed.
The explosion didn't ask for permission.
One instant, you're driving. The next, you're airborne. The blast throws the vehicle like it weighs nothing. Dust fills the cabin. Gear becomes projectiles. Your helmet slams into metal. Your body is tossed in every direction at once. It's loud, violent, and confusing. For a few moments, you don't know which way is up or whether the vehicle is even upright anymore.
Then comes the silence.
You check yourself. You check your buddies. Everyone starts yelling names, making sure the people next to them are still alive. Adrenaline takes over, and somehow you convince yourself you're fine. You climb out if you can. You pull security. You continue the mission because that's what Veterans do. The bruises, soreness, and headaches can wait until later.
Except sometimes later lasts for years.
Blast exposure has a way of leaving injuries you can't always see. Concussions. Traumatic brain injuries. Hearing loss. Tinnitus. Neck injuries. Back pain. Damaged joints. PTSD. Anxiety every time you hear a loud bang or drive down a lonely road. The explosion may have lasted only a split second, but its effects can stay with you for a lifetime.
Years later, you sit in a VA examination explaining exactly what happened. You describe the convoy, the explosion, the blast wave, the injuries, and the long recovery. To you, there's no question where those problems began. You lived through one of the most violent experiences a human being can endure.
Yet for some Veterans, another envelope arrives with another decision.
Not Service Connected.
This shirt is for every Veteran who climbed into a military vehicle knowing there were no guarantees about making it back. It's for the drivers, gunners, passengers, convoy commanders, and everyone who experienced the terrifying reality of an IED blast. The vehicle may have been repaired or replaced.
