Crayon Casualties T-Shirt - The Story Behind the Design

The Story Behind the Shirt
Every branch has jokes about the other branches. Marines have heard every crayon joke ever invented, and by this point, most just laugh along. Somewhere along the way, eating crayons became part of Marine Corps folklore, and honestly, the jokes have become almost as legendary as the Corps itself.
This shirt takes that joke one step further.
Snack Time Gone Wrong
Apparently one Marine got so excited about snack time that they reached for the crayon a little too aggressively and managed to pull a shoulder in the process. Only a Marine could somehow turn eating a crayon into an injury requiring ice, Motrin, and someone asking, "How in the world did you manage that?"
That's military humor.
The funniest part is that every Veteran knows someone who could probably make this story believable. Marines have an incredible talent for accomplishing amazing things while simultaneously hurting themselves in ways that defy logic. Pulling a muscle getting out of a Humvee. Twisting an ankle stepping into a fighting hole. Throwing out a back lifting something that definitely should have required two people. So why not a shoulder injury from attacking a box of crayons with just a little too much motivation?
Not Always a Joke
Years later, those shoulder injuries aren't always jokes anymore. Rotator cuff tears. Strains. Arthritis. Limited range of motion. Countless hours carrying heavy gear, climbing obstacles, lifting equipment, and enduring the physical demands of military service all leave their mark. Veterans file VA disability claims, explain years of repetitive wear and tear, and hope someone connects the dots between military service and the pain they still live with today.
Then comes the decision.
For some Veterans, despite years of abuse to their shoulders, the answer somehow becomes Not Service Connected.
Laugh at the Absurd
This shirt isn't making fun of injured Veterans. It's making fun of the legendary Marine crayon stereotype that has been part of military culture for years. It's a reminder that sometimes the best way to deal with pain, frustration, and life's absurd moments is to laugh at them. Every Marine knows the joke. Every Veteran appreciates the sarcasm. And if anyone asks how you hurt your shoulder, just tell them you were eating crayons too enthusiastically.
That's another unforgettable story from Not Service Connected.
