Everyone loves the sound of freedom... until you're standing ten feet away from it.
If you've ever served with artillery, worked around howitzers, supported a cannon battery, or fired ceremonial guns during military funerals, you know there is no sound quite like it. It doesn't simply reach your ears. It hits your entire body. The concussion rolls through your chest, rattles your teeth, and reminds you that physics doesn't care how tough you think you are.
Hearing Protection Doesn't Solve Everything
People assume hearing protection solves everything.
Veterans know better.
Foam earplugs. Over-the-ear muffs. Double hearing protection. You wore whatever was issued because that's what you were supposed to do. Then the command came. The lanyard was pulled. BOOM. The blast echoed across the range, the valley, or the cemetery. Before the sound of one round had completely disappeared, another one was already on its way.
For artillery crews, this wasn't a once-in-a-while experience. It was another day at work. Round after round. Training exercise after training exercise. Deployment after deployment. The guns never seemed to get any quieter.
A Final Salute
For Veterans assigned to military funeral honors, the experience carried a different meaning. Standing in formation beside fellow Service Members, rendering honors to someone who had worn the uniform before you, every round fired from those howitzers or ceremonial cannons was done with respect and precision. It was one final salute to a fellow Veteran. It was an honor to be part of it, even if your ears paid the price.
"What?"
At the time, the ringing didn't seem like a big deal.
Someone would ask, "Can you hear me?"
You'd answer, "What?"
Everyone laughed because everyone was saying the same thing.
The ringing usually faded by the next morning. Until one day it didn't.
The Ringing Never Stopped
Years later, countless Veterans still hear that high-pitched ringing every moment of every day. Tinnitus. Hearing loss. Difficulty understanding conversations in crowded rooms. Family members asking why the television is so loud. Sleepless nights because true silence no longer exists. You explain years of artillery fire, ceremonial gun salutes, and repeated noise exposure during your VA disability claim. To you, the connection is undeniable. You spent years standing next to one of the loudest weapons systems ever built.
