A Veteran gift should feel like them.
From the NSC Field Guide.
Choose for the person’s taste, humor, and routine. Avoid assumptions about their service.
Start with what the person likes. Their service may be part of the gift’s meaning, but it does not tell you their preferred shirt fit, favorite color, or sense of humor. A small amount of listening makes a more thoughtful choice than a larger budget.
Ask three low-pressure questions
- Would they enjoy something to wear, something useful around the house, or an experience together?
- Do they like an obvious message, a quiet design, or a joke they get to explain?
- Have they already shown you a design they like?
Match the gift to a real preference
If they like graphic tees, confirm the fit and color before buying. If you do not know their size, consider a non-sized item they would actually use. The tote and cork coaster below are examples from our store; check each live page for current details.
HERo and She Carried offer different designs to consider if the recipient has expressed interest in them. Let the person choose which message fits. Do not infer someone’s experiences from a design name or buy a joke about an experience they have never chosen to discuss.
Add a note that sounds like you
Keep it specific and ordinary: “This reminded me of your sense of humor,” or “I thought you would use this on your weekend errands.” A sincere sentence does more than a speech about what all Veterans are supposed to be like.
A final check
