A better starting point for Veteran resources

From the NSC Field Guide.

Find the right official starting point, keep a simple record, and know what to bring to the next conversation.

Searching for help can turn into a dozen open tabs and no clear next step. Start with the task in front of you: finding an official resource, arranging help, or organizing information you already have. This desk is a short route to those starting points.

Choose the next useful action

Find an official explanation
Use the VA resources and support library. Search for the actual task, such as changing an address or understanding a letter, instead of trying to learn the entire system at once.
Find help with a benefits claim
Start with the VA’s guide to accredited representatives. The VA explains the different types of representative and how to find one. Accredited Veterans Service Organization representatives provide claims assistance free of charge.
Get ready for a conversation
Use our appointment notes guide to organize questions and next steps. Keep personal records in your own secure storage, not in a website contact form.

A small paperwork system that is easier to maintain

Choose one folder for incoming letters, one for copies you have sent, and one running note for follow-up. Date each note. Give saved files descriptive names, such as 2026-10-24-address-update-confirmation, so they remain understandable months later.

For each item, record only what helps you follow up: the date received, the task, the contact or official source, any deadline stated in the document, and the next action. Keep the original notice. If you do not understand a deadline or request, ask the issuing office or an accredited representative rather than guessing.

A reusable follow-up note

  • What am I trying to resolve?
  • Which document or reference number relates to it?
  • What did the office or representative say?
  • What is the next action, and who is doing it?
  • When should I check again?
